How the Oregon 1099 tax calculator works

A 1099 freelancer in Oregon pays up to three taxes on the same profit: federal self-employment tax, federal income tax, and Oregon income tax. All of them are figured on net profit, meaning what clients paid you minus deductible business expenses.

Self-employment tax is the Social Security and Medicare tax an employer would normally split with you. As a freelancer you pay both halves on Schedule SE, on 92.35% of your net profit:

SE tax=net profit×92.35%×15.3%\text{SE tax} = \text{net profit} \times 92.35\% \times 15.3\%
12.4% Social Security (up to $184,500 in 2026) plus 2.9% Medicare

Federal income tax then applies to what is left after three deductions: half of your self-employment tax, the standard deduction ($16,100 single, $32,200 married filing jointly in 2026) and, for most freelancers, the 20% qualified business income (QBI) deduction:

Taxable income=net profit−12 SE tax−standard deduction−QBI\text{Taxable income} = \text{net profit} - \tfrac{1}{2}\,\text{SE tax} - \text{standard deduction} - \text{QBI}

SE
Self-employment tax: Social Security plus Medicare on 92.35% of net profit
QBI
Qualified business income deduction: up to 20% of business profit, capped at 20% of taxable income

High earners also owe the 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on self-employment earnings above $200,000 (single) or $250,000 (joint). The QBI deduction starts to phase out once taxable income passes $201,750 (single) and is gone $75,000 later; the calculator phases it out as for a business with no employees. For a specified service business, such as consulting, only the applicable percentage of the income counts in that range as well (IRC 199A(d)(3)), so the deduction shrinks faster; switch it on in the calculator. It also applies the $400 minimum deduction that starts in 2026 for anyone with at least $1,000 of qualified business income.

The estimate leaves out deductions that depend on your situation, such as the new deduction for people 65 and older (up to $6,000 each, 2025 through 2028) and the deduction for qualified tips.

Oregon income tax

Oregon has 4 income tax brackets, topping out at 9.9%. Before applying its rates, Oregon allows a $2,910.00 standard deduction ($5,820.00 joint) and $256.00 of personal credits ($512.00 joint). The calculator subtracts those amounts from your federal AGI, applies the rates below and then subtracts any credits:

Oregon tax=rates(AGI−Oregon deductions)−credits\text{Oregon tax} = \text{rates}\big(\text{AGI} - \text{Oregon deductions}\big) - \text{credits}

Oregon details that affect your estimate

  • Oregon lets taxpayers deduct some or all of the federal income tax they pay. This estimate doesn't apply that deduction, so it may overstate Oregon tax.
  • Oregon's personal exemption credit isn't allowed when federal AGI exceeds $100,000 (single) or $200,000 (joint); the calculator applies that cutoff.

Local income taxes: Counties or cities in Oregon levy their own income taxes, averaging 0.18% of AGI where they apply. The calculator leaves them out.

State figures come from the Tax Foundation's table of 2026 rates and brackets, updated for laws passed later that apply to all of 2026. Confirm with the Oregon Department of Revenue (opens in a new tab) before you file.

Worked example: Oregon freelancers at three incomes

Here is the 2026 estimate for a single freelancer in Oregon with no other income, taking the standard deduction and the QBI deduction:

Single filer in Oregon, 2026
Net profitSelf-employment taxFederal income taxOregon income taxTotalEffective rate
$50,000$7,064.78$2,667.29$3,236.29$12,968.3625.9%
$100,000$14,129.55$8,235.00$7,302.21$29,666.7629.7%
$150,000$21,194.33$16,413.30$11,756.29$49,363.9232.9%

At $100,000 of profit, self-employment tax is the largest single piece at $14,129.55, more than federal income tax of $8,235.00. Oregon adds $7,302.21, bringing the total to $29,666.76, or $7,416.69 a quarter. Of the 50 states and D.C., Oregon has the 51st-lowest state income tax bill at this income.

Oregon vs. neighboring states

Taxes are one factor in where you live and work, and they change sharply across state lines. Here is the same $100,000 single freelancer in Oregon and nearby states:

$100,000 of freelance profit, single filer, 2026
StateState income taxTotal taxTake-home pay
Nevada$0.00$22,364.55$77,635.45
Washington$0.00$22,364.55$77,635.45
Idaho$3,817.28$26,181.83$73,818.17
California$4,413.39$26,777.94$73,222.06
Oregon$7,302.21$29,666.76$70,333.24

Nevada comes out lowest at $22,364.55 and Oregon highest at $29,666.76, a difference of $7,302.21 a year. Remember that a state's total tax burden also includes sales and property taxes, and that you generally owe income tax where you live and work, not where your clients are.

States with similar income taxes

Oregon is one of 27 states that tax income at graduated rates. These are the closest to it for a single filer with $100,000 of freelance profit:

  • District of Columbia: $4,930.99 of state income tax. District of Columbia has 7 income tax brackets, topping out at 10.75%.
  • Hawaii: $5,259.33 of state income tax. Hawaii has 12 income tax brackets, topping out at 11%.
  • North Dakota: $553.02 of state income tax. North Dakota has 2 income tax brackets, topping out at 2.5%.
  • Rhode Island: $2,868.20 of state income tax. Rhode Island has 3 income tax brackets, topping out at 5.99%.

Quarterly estimated taxes for Oregon freelancers

No employer withholds tax from 1099 income, so the IRS expects you to pay during the year using Form 1040-ES. For 2026, the four payments are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. You generally avoid an underpayment penalty if your payments cover at least 90% of this year's tax or 100% of last year's (110% if last year's AGI was above $150,000).

Oregon income tax is paid separately. The Oregon Department of Revenue has its own estimated payment forms; most states use the same quarterly dates as the IRS. The "Quarterly payments" view above splits your estimate into equal federal and state installments you can schedule now.

Ways to lower the bill

  • Track every business expense. Software, equipment, a dedicated home office and business mileage all reduce net profit, which lowers all three taxes at once.
  • Deduct self-employed health insurance and retirement contributions. A SEP-IRA or solo 401(k) can shelter a large share of freelance income from income tax.
  • Keep the tax money separate. Moving your set-aside percentage into a high-yield savings account as each payment arrives earns interest until the quarterly due date.

The bottom line

A Oregon freelancer's 1099 tax bill is mostly federal: on $100,000 of net profit, self-employment tax is $14,129.55 and federal income tax $8,235.00, with $7,302.21 of Oregon income tax on top. All in, that is $29,666.76, or 29.7% of profit.

Set aside about that share of every payment, pay the IRS and the state each quarter, and rerun the Oregon 1099 tax calculator when your income changes.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I set aside for taxes as a freelancer in Oregon?

A single freelancer in Oregon with $75,000 of net profit would owe about $20,764.15 in 2026, or 27.7%; at $100,000 the estimate is $29,666.76 (29.7%). Setting aside a similar share of every payment you receive, and paying it in quarterly installments, keeps you from facing a large bill and underpayment penalties at filing time.

Does Oregon have a state income tax?

Yes. Oregon has 4 income tax brackets, topping out at 9.9%. In this estimate, Oregon income tax on $100,000 of freelance profit is $7,302.21 for a single filer.

What is the self-employment tax rate in Oregon?

Self-employment tax is a federal tax, so Oregon self-employment tax uses the same rate as every other state: 15.3% (12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare) on 92.35% of your net profit. The Social Security part stops at $184,500 of net earnings in 2026, and earnings above $200,000 (single) owe an extra 0.9% Medicare tax. Oregon doesn't add a separate self-employment tax.

When are estimated tax payments due in Oregon?

Federal estimated payments for 2026 are due April 15, June 15 and September 15, 2026, and January 15, 2027. Oregon Department of Revenue sets the rules for Oregon estimated tax payments; most states follow the same quarterly schedule as the IRS.

Are there local income taxes in Oregon?

Counties or cities in Oregon levy their own income taxes, averaging 0.18% of AGI where they apply. This estimate leaves local taxes out, so check whether your city or county levies one.

How much will I take home on $100,000 of freelance income in Oregon?

About $70,333.24 for a single filer, or $5,861.10 a month, after $14,129.55 of self-employment tax, $8,235.00 of federal income tax and $7,302.21 of Oregon income tax. Business expenses you deduct before reaching that profit, and retirement or health insurance deductions, would lower the tax further.
